August 6, 2026 Nationwide Recall of Target Baby Wipes Over Bacterial Contamination

On August 6, 2026 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Target announced a nationwide recall of the Up & Up baby wipes sold in Target stores and on the company’s website. The recall follows testing that revealed contamination with two species of Burkholderia bacteria that can cause severe, life‑threatening infections, particularly in newborns, infants, and others with weakened immune systems.

Customers first reported noticing discoloration on the wipes. Subsequent investigations and laboratory analyses confirmed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli in samples from both fragrance‑free and fresh cucumber‑scented formulations. The bacteria pose a risk of bloodstream infection, sepsis, and pneumonia in vulnerable populations. Dermatologic and ophthalmologic irritation has also been reported in some users.

Target’s voluntary recall covers a range of quantities: the fragrance‑free wipes appear in 20‑, 72‑, 216‑, 800‑, and 1,200‑count packs, while the cucumber‑scents come in 72‑, 216‑, and 800‑count packages. The affected products were manufactured by Sapro Temizlik Urunleri in Turkey, but were distributed nationwide through Target’s retail and online channels. Target stresses that the recall is precautionary, driven by the company’s commitment to consumer safety and pending ongoing investigations.

Consumers who possess any of the recalled wipes should immediately discontinue use and keep the products separate from other baby care items. Target offers a full refund for returns to any store location. The company’s Guest Relations line, (800) 440‑0680, is available to answer questions and facilitate returns between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. CT.

This recall underscores the importance of vigilance in product safety, especially for items used on infants. It also highlights the role of regulatory agencies in monitoring and addressing potential hazards in everyday products. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to check the UPC codes listed in the recall notice and to confirm whether their baby wipes have been flagged. Vigilance and timely action can prevent serious illness and protect the health of the most vulnerable members of the community.
