Billy Crystal says he no longer trusts God after wildfire home loss and friend’s death

Billy Crystal told CBS Sunday Morning on Oct. 11, 2026 that he no longer trusts God after the 2025 Pacific Palisades wildfire destroyed his family home and the December 2025 murder of longtime friend Rob Reiner left him bereft.

The comedian, 78, was promoting his new one‑person Broadway production “860,” a show titled for the street address of the house that stood for 46 years and that now forms the set for his on‑stage reflections.

When asked whether he still talked to God, Crystal answered, “No, ’cause I don’t trust Him,” adding that “too many bad things have happened.” He described the Earth as “in bad shape, this is a weird, scary time,” and said he has stopped praying.

Crystal’s home, which he and his wife Janice raised their children and grandchildren in, was reduced to ashes after the January 2025 wildfire. He recalled visiting the charred site weeks later, falling to his knees and wailing, a reaction he said he hadn’t felt since he was 15.

Rob Reiner, the director and actor who co‑starred with Crystal on “When Harry Met Sally,” and his wife Michele were killed in their Brentwood residence in December 2025. Crystal said he had said goodbye to Reiner at a holiday party the night before their deaths.

Despite the tragedies, Crystal emphasized humor as a coping tool, noting, “That’s what I do. It’s a healer.” He also referenced his earlier one‑man show “700 Sundays,” in which he spoke openly about conversations with God.

“860” recreates Crystal’s home office onstage and weaves together family memories, career milestones, and the recent grief, allowing the performer to process loss while offering audiences a blend of comedy and contemplation.

Crystal said the new production has already helped him absorb “the biggest pains that people couldn’t go through – the loss of home, dearest of friends,” and he feels “OK” moving forward.
