Harvard wins on Hail Mary lateral to beat Colgate 20-17
Harvard Crimson defeated Colgate Raiders 20‑17 on Saturday night in Cambridge after a last‑second Hail Mary lateral sequence.
The win preserved Harvard’s unbeaten start at 3‑0 and secured first place in the Ivy League, while the loss dropped Colgate to 4‑2 in the Patriot League.
With four seconds left and the ball at the Colgate 44‑yard line, quarterback Charlie Smith drifted left and launched a deep pass that was corralled at the five‑yard line by senior tight end Teigan Pelletier. Two Raiders defenders closed in, and Pelletier quickly pitched the ball back to freshman wide receiver Nate Bailey, who sprinted from the eight‑yard line into the end zone as the clock hit zero.
A false‑start penalty on Harvard’s special teams earlier in the drive had pushed the team out of field‑goal range, forcing the final play. The penalty turned what might have been a tying kick into a desperate, game‑winning gamble.
Bailey finished with 16 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown, the second‑most receiving yards in a single Harvard game, just five yards shy of the school record. Smith threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns, while Colgate quarterback Jake Stearney completed 21 of 39 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown.
The Raiders had taken a 17‑14 lead with 27 seconds left when Stearney connected with wide receiver Matt Fogler on a 13‑yard touchdown pass. Harvard’s earlier drive had set up a potential long field‑goal try for kicker Francisco Moscoso, but the penalty erased that option.
Harvard entered the game ranked 20th in the Stats Perform poll; Colgate was 22nd. After the victory, the Crimson will travel to face Cornell on Saturday, aiming to extend their flawless start.
