May 28, 2026 Rome: Pope Leo XIV Calls for Authentic Witness to Address Religious Indifference
On May 28, 2026, inside the Consistory Hall of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Pope Leo XIV addressed members of the Dicastery for Evangelization. He emphasised that the Church must confront religious indifference by refusing to dilute the Gospel’s demands and instead offering credible Christian witness.
The pontiff warned that Western societies suffer from a crisis of faith, where many see the faith as irrelevant. In this climate, the search for meaning is lost to a consumer‑saturated culture that values instant gratification.
Leo highlighted that the true attraction of Christianity lies not in “watering down” content but in bearing humble and courageous testimony to “the way, the truth, and the life.” He urged priests, parishes, and Catholic centres to maintain rigorous catechesis and accompany new believers after Baptism and Confirmation, fostering a deeper spiritual life.
Revisiting Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, the Pope called for a Christ‑centred mission that confronts changing cultural conditions, especially in the youth ministry. He praised the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, which drew over 33 million pilgrims, as evidence of the Church’s power to restore hope and purpose.
In closing, Leo reaffirmed the Church’s urgency in building “a future of peace, justice, freedom, and fraternity” and called on all Catholics to keep their gaze fixed on God. He said that through lived faith the Church can make the sanctity of life the most convincing expression of its beauty, transcending time and culture.
