NCFE Aspiration Awards 2026 Celebrate Trailblazing Learners and Educators Across the UK

Introduction

The NCFE Aspiration Awards 2026 were announced on 25 June, marking the ninth year that the education charity NCFE celebrates the brightest achievements in further education across the United Kingdom. Winners were honoured in categories that showcase the impact of learners, educators, apprentices and organisations on both personal development and community wellbeing.

Educator of the Year

Andrew Johnson, a health and social care lecturer at Redcar and Cleveland College, received the Educator of the Year award. His project with Teesside Hospice engaged 16‑ to 18‑year‑old students in designing comfort packages for end‑of‑life care, breaking down taboos around death and providing real‑world experience. Johnson said the learners are “the heart and soul of everything I do,” reflecting a deep commitment to student‑centred, innovative teaching.

Learner of the Year – Against All Odds

Lucas McElroy, a student at Blenheim High School, won the Against All Odds prize after overcoming Spina Bifida, congenital hydrocephalus and multiple surgeries. Despite missing school for medical treatment, he excelled academically and pursued wheelchair racing, dreaming of the Paralympics. His determination demonstrates how resilience and supportive education can unlock extraordinary potential.

Apprentice and Centre Recognitions

Jacob Naylor of Leeds City College was named Apprentice of the Year for his contributions to the NHS, while the Early Years Department at Blackburn College earned the Centre of the Year award. Blackburn College’s Malawi partnership, which raised over £10 000 to build a nursery, illustrates how institutions can extend learning beyond borders to create lasting social impact.

Support Staff Excellence

Bradford College Careers Adviser Gulshan Bi was honoured as Support Staff of the Year. Over nearly two decades, Bi has guided countless students toward confident career choices, embodying the essential role of dedicated support staff in student success.

Deborah Jenkins MBE, Chair of the NCFE Board of Trustees, highlighted that the awards “showcase that success can take many different forms” and celebrate the dedication of those who improve lives through education. The ceremony underscored education’s capacity to inspire, empower and uplift communities across the UK.
