Senate Judiciary Chair Grassley says Jack Smith obtained data on 639,000 Republican supporters

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R‑Iowa, announced on Wednesday that former Special Counsel Jack Smith and the Biden Justice Department obtained spreadsheets containing personal data on more than 639,000 Republican donors, voters and supporters.

Grassley said the records span a 16‑year period from 2005 through 2021 and include names, birth dates, home addresses, email addresses, party affiliation, employment information, donation amounts, credit‑card details and donor‑habit analyses. Over 148,000 of the entries are identified as donors, many of whom gave modest contributions.

The data also cover individuals who purchased red “Make America Great Again” hats, revealing shipping addresses and purchase details. Grassley described the breadth of the collection as evidence that the Special Counsel operation was designed to map out the Republican Party.

The revelation follows Grassley’s September disclosure that Smith’s team subpoenaed roughly 5,000 checks from donors to former President Donald Trump’s campaign. In a recent hearing, Smith answered “yes” when asked whether his office obtained donor financial information, adding that the subpoenas were part of a criminal investigation and that he could not recite every subpoena issued.

According to the memo released to the committee, the spreadsheets were provided to Grassley in response to congressional subpoenas seeking further details about the special counsel’s efforts to gather data on Trump‑aligned organizations. The memo also notes that the investigation obtained information on Trump campaign personnel, potentially including volunteers.

Grassley said the extensive data collection goes well beyond the stated mission of the “Arctic Frost” probe, which was originally focused on alleged fake‑elector schemes and the January 6 Capitol attack. He warned that the Justice Department and FBI now possess thousands of Americans’ personal and financial information.

The chairman called on Senate Judiciary Democrats to join his oversight work and indicated that further hearings may be scheduled to examine the legality and scope of the data acquisition.
