Ted Cruz calls JD Vance insecure over 2028 election remarks
Senator Ted Cruz of Texas called Vice President JD Vance “insecure” on Oct. 4, 2026, after Vance implied the Texas lawmaker was already gearing up for a 2028 presidential bid.
Cruz made the remark in a Politico interview, saying, “In my experience, people engage in political bomb‑throwing when they’re feeling insecure,” and added that he would keep his focus on the upcoming midterms and helping Republicans win on Election Day.
“So he’s welcome to make whatever comments he likes,” Cruz said. “I’m going to keep focusing on the midterms and helping us win on Election Day in the next 30 days.”
Vance, widely viewed as a frontrunner for the 2028 GOP nomination, had earlier suggested Cruz was more interested in the future presidential race than the current campaigns. In response, Vance told NBC News he was not running for president, emphasizing his role in supporting Republican candidates.
The barbed exchange reflects deeper tensions within the party. Traditional conservatives like Cruz favor a return to free‑market principles and fiscal restraint, while the MAGA wing pushes for a populist agenda and reduced foreign entanglements. Both leaders have been active in recruiting and campaigning for GOP candidates ahead of the November midterms.
Cruz, the 2016 second‑place finisher in the Republican primary, recalled his past campaign work, noting he has “campaign[ed] for more Senate, House, and gubernatorial candidates than any Republican in the country.” He also remembered spending a day on the road with Vance during the 2022 Ohio Senate race, praising Vance’s victory then.
The rivalry is likely to intensify as the party shapes its strategy for 2028, with each side positioning itself for the next presidential nomination while navigating the immediate pressures of the upcoming elections.
