Washington D.C. – Trump Claims No Political Pressure to Finalize Iran Deal

President Donald Trump announced that he feels no political pressure to make an agreement with Iran, despite soaring oil prices and heightened geopolitical tensions.

On May 28, 2026, Trump said that high oil prices would not compel him to secure a ceasefire extension or a nuclear agreement. He hopes to formalize a peace deal, particularly one that guarantees Iran will remain without nuclear weapons, restores unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and eliminates mines in the waterway.

The following day, in a session held in the White House Situation Room, Trump met with advisers to make a “final determination” about the Iran agreement. He emphasized that the United States would lift its blockade of the Strait if Iran met the conditions.

According to the government officials, a memorandum of understanding was already agreed upon, pending approval from both sides. By allowing a 60‑day ceasefire extension, the deal could lay foundations for future nuclear talks, despite the Revolutionary Guard's recent condemnation and the ongoing ceasefire violations reported by both sides.

Throughout the discussion, the President reiterated that the United States does not require a negotiated arrangement to obtain enriched uranium from Iran. “No money will be exchanged until further notice,” Trump said during a Truth Social post.

While the U.S. and Iran signal their readiness to negotiate, the parties are still far from a concrete agreement, with Iran insisting their nuclear program is purely peaceful and rejecting guarantees. The Kremlin and the Iranian foreign ministry also remain skeptical, asserting that actions rather than words are necessary for progress.
